4 Must-Visit Cities in the Dominican Republic

BY RENATA WIESE-GARCIA, BLOGGER

Looking for a new vacation spot? The Dominican Republic has so much to offer. Punta Cana, Samana and Santo Domingo, are known for their beautiful beaches and culture and are a must-visit (after the COVID-19 pandemic, of course)! From mountains and beaches to national parks and ancient buildings, beauty is found in every corner of the island.

As a Dominican Republic native I have travelled to many different locations on the island. I go down to the Dominican about three times a year to visit family and friends. Although I spend the majority of my time in the capital, Santo Domingo, I normally tend to get away for a weekend or two to one of the marvelous locations the island has to offer.

Punta Cana is the major tourist spot of the Dominican Republic, but there are so many other cities people should venture out to. Here are a few locations you should consider when visiting:

Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is the island’s capital. Here, tourists encounter all the major businesses and buildings. As you go through Santo Domingo, you might end up in the Colonial Zone, also known as La Zona Colonial. This zone includes Christopher Columbus’s castle as well as the most decadent churches, parks and restaurants. Being in the capital allows tourists to embrace the true Dominican culture and connect with the people.

La Romana

While visiting La Romana, you will be surrounded by its beautiful beaches and nature. This is a lowkey destination where many people might not think to visit. In La Romana, you can rent an entire villa instead of staying in a hotel which gives you access to your own pool and/or private beach.

Although there are few clubs and bars, the ones there are worthwhile. These bars and clubs are nothing like the ones we know and love in Athens, Ohio. When entering one of these establishments, you will have the urge to dance the night away. The lights are dim and the music is loud. When I step foot in a club I feel a sense of happiness because I know I am right where I am supposed to be!

Las Terrenas

This city is located at the north side of the island. I think of this location as a mini Punta Cana. The beaches are typically in walking distance or a short drive away, and are picture perfect with white sand and water so clear you can see the fish swimming around. Although you may not find fancy clubs or bars, tourists will definitely have a great experience when visiting Las Terrenas.

Punta Cana

The famous Punta Cana is the most tourist-filled area in the country. When visiting Punta Cana, you can visit Scape Park, for a picturesque excursion to explore the mountains and hike throughout the city. Although the resorts and hotels provide nightlife, you are able to find more in the city.

Coco Bongo and Imagine are the two main clubs, but if you’re looking for a family-friendly night out, Coco Bongo’s live performances are a must-see. On the other hand, if you are looking for a night of dancing and fun, turn toward Imagine Nightclub, located inside of a cave!

The Dominican Republic is a beautiful Island that I call home and recommend for anyone looking to satisfy their wanderlust!
